State Minister for ICT Division Zunaid Ahmed on Sunday said the government would set up an international standard "cyber gym" as part of its preparedness to tackle cyber security risk.

“Bangladesh has to take preparation to tackle cyber security risk, which is growing due to increased use of technology, to avert untoward incident and minimize risk at individual and organization level,” said Zunaid.

The junior minister came up with the call while addressing a seminar on “Growing cyber threats around the world and preparedness for Bangladesh”, jointly organized by the Armed Forces Division and Department of Computer Science and Engineer, Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) in Dhaka.

A world-class "cyber gym" would be set up at the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) at a cost of Tk12 crore, said the junior minister.

The minister said: "We are at cyber risk including individuals, families, institutions and the state."

He urged the younger generation to prepare to deal with cyber threats.

Lieutenant General Md Mahfuzur Rahman, Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces Division, said: “Cyber security is protecting and recovering networks, devices, and programs from any cyber attack."

However, a strong cyber security system relied not only on cyber defense technology, but also on people making smart cyber defense choices, said  Mahfuzur.

Cyber security risk analyst Shareeful Islam, senior lecturer, University of East London, UK said: “Currently cyber security requires a new line of defence as there are new threats. So, we need to develop cyber security capabilities."

Panel speaker Maj Gen Sheikh Monirul Islam stressed focusing on cyber risk in the financial sector as well as in society.

Major General Waheed Ud Zaman presided over the seminar.
