She will be the first woman to hold the position in BGMEA history

Rubana Huq, the newly elected president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), will take charge of the association on Saturday.

Outgoing BGMEA President Md Siddiqur Rahman will hand over the charge to Rubana at the trade body's new office in Uttara.

Rubana, managing director of Mohammadi Group, is the first woman to have been elected for the position in the trade body's history.

She is the wife of late Dhaka North City Corporation mayor and former BGMEA president Annisul Huq.

The new chairman, who led the Sammilita Forum panel in the BGMEA election held on April 6, will lead the trade body for the next two years.

During the recently held election, Rubana's panel won all 35 available posts for directors.

The last BGMEA election was held in 2013. The election is usually scheduled every two years. However, it was not held in 2015 since both Sammilito and Forum panels jointly decided to elect the board in consensus.

The outgoing president of the apex trade body, Siddiqur Rahman, served as head of BGMEA for three years and seven months.
