The Department of Environment (DoE) has fined a Chittagong-based edible oil refinery Tk4.80 lakh for polluting the Karnaphuli River through releasing untreated waste into the water body.
The fine was slapped during a hearing held at DoE's Chittagong Metropolitan office on Wednesday.
The errant enterprise was identified as Bay Fishing Corporation Ltd, located at the port city's Airport Road area.
Previously on March 12, an enforcement team had conducted a drive and collected samples from the ETP (Effluent Treatment Plant) outlet of the business and tested them in the laboratory.
However, the collected samples—pH, TDS, DO, BOD, COD, and SS—tested at the laboratory were found beyond the parameters set by the Environment Conservation Rules, 1997.
Chittagong Metropolitan DoE Assistant Director (Technical) Sangjucta Das Gupta told the Dhaka Tribune that the errant business was fined for polluting the Karnaphuli River through discharging "untreated liquid waste and violating the conditions of the Environment Clearance Certificate."
