The drive will continue till April 15
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) is collecting information of more than 75,000 home owners in 31 wards of Khulna City Corporation (KCC) to tackle tax evasion and increase revenue collection.
According to the revenue collecting authority’s directive, the drive will continue till April 15.
Additional Tax Commissioner of the district’s tax department survey circle 1, Rebeka Khanam, confirmed this to the Dhaka Tribune on Thursday, saying home owners have the capacity to pay taxes, but many are reportedly evading it.
The NBR’s drive is being undertaken to identify these evaders, she added.
“NBR in Dhaka will take appropriate action against tax evaders,” Rebeka told the Dhaka Tribune.
Sources at the local NBR office said a letter from their office was sent to KCC’s chief executive officer on November 25 last year for the necessary cooperation.
The letter was signed by Md Asaduzzaman, tax commissioner of the central tax survey zone in Dhaka.
It was specified in the letter that a substantial number of building owners, both commercial and residential, were found not to have any income tax papers.
The letter resulted in the information collection drive by Khulna’s tax department, also directed by the KCC mayor’s office.
Information collection has already begun in six of 31 wards, while local tax officials hope to cover all the wards by April 15.
The drive is being led by the district’s joint tax inspector Manzur Alam. The required documents include a copy of the national identification card (NID), income sources, and other details.
Home owners must also submit information about the amount of taxes they have already deposited annually so far, sources added.
