Aiming for greater inclusion of differently abled people into the country's job market, Bangladesh Business and Disability Network (BBDN) and BRAC jointly hosted a job fair, attracting employers from 20 different industries.

Out of 232 job-seekers, 110 people with disabilities successfully availed employment through the event organized at the capital's Krishibid Institution Bangladesh, yesterday.

Recruiting managers offered appointment letters to 26 of the candidates on the spot.

Speaking to the Dhaka Tribune, the newest employee of Vintage Denim Ltd Alauddin Khan said that he was very happy to finally secure a job after years of rejection due to his disability.

"I lost my left arm in an accident as a child, and have never had a job until today," added Alauddin.

While speaking at the opening ceremony of the event, government officials explained that providing jobs to people with disabilities is necessary to achieve the government's sustainable development goals (SDG).

“Since the government is working to achieve SDGs, nobody should be left behind," said Principal Coordinator of SDG Affairs at the Prime Minister’s Office Md Abul Kalam Azad, who attended the program as the Chief Guest.

He added that job fairs like these are highly motivational for people with disabilities.

International Labour Organization (ILO) Country Director for Bangladesh, Tuomo Poutiainen said: "I wish success to this award ceremony and expect it to increase greater participation of the persons with disabilities in skills and employment in Bangladesh promoting a very inclusive workplace.’

Later in the day, BBDN and Bangladesh Employers Federation (BEF) also organized an award ceremony to recognize and encourage employers promoting disability inclusion in their respective industries.

Square Group, Viyellatex Group, Akhtar Group, DBL Group, Shin Shin Group, Urmi Group, Picard Bangladesh, Vintage Denim Ltd, Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Sylhet Chamber of Commerce and Industry were awarded at the ceremony for their role in boosting disability inclusion in the country.
