Minister: Pay July wages before Eid

Representatives from workers and owners have agreed to the decision and pledged to comply

State Minister for Labor and Employment Md Mujibul Haque Chunnu asked the factory owners from all industries to pay their workers festival bonus on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha before August 16.

The junior minister also directed employers to pay partial salaries for the current month by August 19.

The state minister was speaking at meeting of Crisis Management Core Committee held on Thursday at his secretariat office. The meeting was called to discuss the labor situation and payment of wages and festival bonus ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.

Representatives from workers and owners have agreed to the decision and pledged to comply.

“As Eid-ul-Azha is expected to be celebrated on August 22 or 23 based on the moon sighting my call to the owners is to pay partial wages for the current month by August 19. Based on your capacity, you can offer wages for 10 days or 15 days,” said Chunnu.

The minister urged the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), and Bangladesh Textile Mills (BTMA) leaders to not operate their factories on Eid-ul-Azha.

He also directed them to announce vacation days based on area to avert traffic congestion in a certain area.

Meanwhile, BGMEA in a meeting has decided to pay workers wages for the month of July by August 10 and to pay festival bonus by August 16, a high official of the trade body confirmed to the Dhaka Tribune.

It also decided to asked owners to pay wages of 10 days for the current month before the announcement of vacation for Eid.
