Users of mobile operators Grameenphone and Robi in parts of Dhaka will enjoy 4G (fourth generation) services from this evening.
Banglalink, the other operator to have won a 4G licence, will launch its 4G network in all major cities and divisional towns.
Grameenphone said initially, users in the Gulshan and Baridhara area will be able to avail 4G.
A Robi official said its 4G services will initially be available in Dhaka and other cities in the country.
“Grameenphone is ready to launch 4G services within 15 minutes after getting licence from BTRC,” Michael Foley, CEO, Grameenphone, said at a press meet on Sunday.
GP introduced two 4G smartphones at the meet.
The operator’s 4G services will start in Gulshan and Baridhara area and possibly Uttara, he said. It will gradually expand to the cities and towns, he added.
“We have been providing 4G-enabled SIMs for the last six months. We have been able to replace 7.2 million SIMs,” said a senior Grameenphone official.
To get 4G services, customers must obtain 4G-enabled SIMs.
Grameenphone introduced two 4G smartphones - WE T1 and Micromax Canvas 1 - at the event. WE T1 will be available in GP sales points at a cost of Tk4,444 and Micromax Canvas-1 I will be available at the cost of Tk7,599.
