A two hour roadblock and demonstration was held at the Burimari land port in Lalmonirhat’s Patgram upazila on Saturday. Local Awami League members and leaders held the protest against a powerful syndicate’s reckless extortion.
They blocked the Lalmonirhat- Burimari highway to hold their protest.
The program was held between 10am- 12pm in front of Burimari land port office.
Awami League conveyer of Burimari union and businessman Tahajul Islam Mithu lead the protest. After the event, joint convener Shahinur Alam Pradhan, ward Awami Lwague chairman Rezaul Karim, Burimari union Chhatra League general secretary Badsha Alamgir were present during the event.
The speakers said:”In order to prevent extortion on import-export, truck stands and labour handling, we will block the land port indefinitely, if necessary.” They also said that a national daily news paper is trying to slander the name of the local MP and Awami League chairman. They said they expect impartial reporting from the media, nothing less.
Patgram police station Officer-in-Charge said, “We sent police forces to Burimari land port to control the situation. The condition is normal now.”
Burimari land port customs assistant commissioner Mostafizur Rahman confirmed the road block. “The import-export was disturbed for about two hours due to the protest. The police intervened and things went back to normal after the event”, he said.
