Bangladesh is now on the list of mobile handset manufacturing countries, through the inauguration of the Walton Smartphone Plant.
“Today is a historical, a joyful and a glorious day for us. The inauguration of Walton Smartphone plant has opened up a new era of ‘Digital Bangladesh,’” State Minister for Telecommunications Tarana Halim said at a press conference held after the launch ceremony for the smartphone manufacturing unit.
Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Chairman Dr Shahjahan Mahmood, Chairman of Walton Hi-tech Industries Limited SM Shamsul Alam, Chairman of Walton Digi-Tech Industries Limited SM Rezaul Alam, and Managing Director SM Monjurul Alam were also present at the event at Walton Digi Tech Industries Limited at Chandra in Gazipur on Thursday, October 5.
Thanking Walton for the initiative, Tarana Halim said: “It was a long cherished dream of our honorable prime minister that Bangladesh will turn into a manufacturer of mobile handsets. I hope Walton smartphones will perform excellently in competition with other foreign brands.”
The Walton Smartphone Manufacturing unit has been set up under the banner of Walton Digi-Tech Industries Limited on about 50,000 square feet of land, with an initial annual production capacity of 2.5 to 3 million handsets.
