Robi-Airtel merger proposal gets PMO nod

The Prime Minister's Office has approved a proposal for the merger of private mobile operators Robi Axiata and Airtel, paving way for first such merger in Bangladesh. An official of the Posts and Telecommunications Division told the Dhaka Tribune that the proposal was cleared on Monday. The government would charge Robi Tk507 crore as spectrum fee and Tk100 crore merger fee. As of June this year, Robi had 27.442 million subscribers and Airtel 9.892 million, according to the telecom regulator.Robi AirtelAfter the merger, the joint venture, which will be named Robi, will have the second largest subscriber base among private mobile operators in Bangladesh after Grameenphone. On July 24, the Posts and Telecommunications Division sent the summary of the merger proposal to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her consent as she is also heads the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology. Apart from the merger fee, the telecom division has also fixed Tk33.8 crore fee for per Megahertz of 2G spectrum, the Posts and Telecommunications Division official added. An inter-ministerial meeting chaired by Finance Minister AMA Muhith finalised the merger fees and spectrum prices on July 13. Earlier this year, the mobile operators signed the merger agreement to venture into a joint business operation in Bangladesh. With the PMO clearance, all that is left is the court's approval as per the Company Act. The matter is expected to be placed before the court on August 4, BTRC lawyer Barrister Mahsib Hossain told the Dhaka Tribune.
