Fate of 1.5m expats in KSA uncertain
In about 10 months time, Bangladeshi expatriates in Saudi Arabia, especially those without machine readable passports, may find themselves in big trouble.
Several years ago, global regulator International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) decided that travellers and expatriates from all countries must have machine readable passports by November 2015. Otherwise, they will not be able to travel and their stay abroad will be illegal.
‘Gunfight’ with police kills college teacher and ‘robber’
In separate incidents of “gunfights” with the police, a college teacher in Rajshahi and an alleged robber in Satkhira were killed in the early hours of yesterday.
The deceased in Rajshahi – Nurul Islam Shahin, 45 – was a teacher of Rajshahi’s Islamia College and also the former president of Jamaat’s ward 30 unit, said Jamaat’s Rajshahi city unit Secretary Jahangir Alam.

The BNP-led 20-party alliance yesterday called a 24-hour shutdown in the capital from today.
The opposition combine also called a 12-hour shutdown in the districts adjacent to the capital today.
PM to police: Do whatever necessary to stop violence
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday asked police to take whatever steps they deem necessary to stop violence unleashed by the BNP-Jamaat alliance across the country in the name of blockade and hartal.
“I will take the responsibility for whatever happens (for the action). But, you’ll have to ensure the security of lives of common people and their property – there is no need for you feel hesitant,” UNB quoted Hasina as saying.
Govt appoints consultant firms to prepare fresh DAP for Dhaka
The government has decided to appoint three consultant firms for drawing up another 20-year detailed area plan (DAP) for Dhaka city under the Dhaka Metropolitan Development Plan (DMDP) project.
The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase approved the proposal, placed by the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, yesterday at a meeting headed by Finance Minister AMA Muhith.
Tofail: Khaleda will have to face trial
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed yesterday warned BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia that she would have to face trial for her directives to create sabotage in the name of a movement.
“You [Khaleda] will be charged with crimes against humanity as per the charter of the United Nations, if you do not stop the nationwide terror. Your trial for the crimes will also be held in the people’s court,” he said.
RMCH struggling with burn victims
The authorities of Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) have plunged into a great trouble with the increasing number of burn patients who fell prey to recent arson attacks.
Hospital sources said sometimes they failed to render proper healthcare services to burn victims for lack of logistical supports. The burn unit was launched in the hospital on July 14 last year.
1 held with petrol bombs in Narsingdi
Detective Branch of police has arrested one with five petrol bombs from Sonar Bangla Market at Madhabdi under Sadar upazila in Narsingdi on Wednesday.
The arrestee is Masum Mia (22), son of Zahar Ali, of Balabhadradi village of Narsingdi Sadar Upazila.
