DB arrests suspected IS recruiter in Dhaka
The Detective Branch of Police yesterday said they had arrested a British citizen of Bangladesh origin who had come to Bangladesh to recruit members for international militant organisations Islamic State and Nusra Brigade, better known as the al-Nusra Front.
DB Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam said Samiun Rahman alias Ibne Hadan, 28, had been picked up from the capital’s Kamalapur area early yesterday after a few days’ chasing.
Saarc countries negotiating on railways, motor vehicles deals
Saarc countries are negotiating regional agreements on railways and motor vehicles with a view to improving connectivity in the region.
Bangladesh has sent three senior officials to New Delhi to attend the fifth Saarc Intergovernmental Group on Transport to be held today where they will discuss transport corridor and how to implement the recommendations of Saarc Regional Multimodal Transport Study, said sources in the foreign and communications ministries.

Durga Puja begins Tuesday

Ashraful can return to cricket in 2016
Disgraced national cricketer Mohammad Ashraful will be eligible for selection in any form of competitive cricket from August 2016. The disciplinary panel of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) delivered the verdict upon appeal of the sanction delivered earlier by the Bangladesh Premier League’s Anti-Corruption Tribunal.
“I thank the Almighty Allah. I am more than happy with the decision,” Ashraful told the Dhaka Tribune over phone yesterday. Ashraful is currently in the US.
High Court: Form body to stop use of steroids on sacrificial animals
The High Court has issued an order asking the government to form a seven-member committee of expert to stop the use of steroids to fatten sacrificial animals.
The HC divisional bench of Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Mohammad Ullah passed the order yesterday following a writ petition filed by Advocate Manjil Morshed on behalf of Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh.
United Airways slammed with Tk50 crore compensation suit
Five passengers of United Airways yesterday filed a Tk50 crore compensation suit against the airliner and seven others as they failed to go to Malaysia on September 24 following a flight cancellation.
Other defendants in the case include the airliner’s chairman, managing director, manager (administration) and manager (operations), managing director of Air Star Travels and Tours, the civil aviation and tourism secretary and the chairman of the civil aviation.
DB, RAB give contradictory statements
RAB and the Detective Branch of police have given conflicting information over the arrests in connection with the Moghbazar triple murder incident.
RAB on Saturday said they detained five people from Munshiganj and Moghbazar for their alleged involvement in the killing of three people in Moghbazar.
Call money rate hits 1-year high ahead of Eid
The interbank call money rate increased substantially to 8.5% over the last two weeks as cash demand has gone up ahead of Eid-ul Azha.
The rate rose to the level after 12 months from 8.11% in August last year.
Dope gang active in capital ahead of Puja, Eid
Police have arrested 10 members of an infamous dope gang, more commonly known as “ogyan party,” yesterday in the capital ahead of Eid-ul-Azha. They also rescued eight people who fell victim to the gang and admitted them at the Dhaka Medical Collage Hospital with the help of locals.
The arrested dope gang members are Md Sumon, 29, Md Hasan, 22, Md Shikder, 28, Md Fuad, 20, Md Abdul Mannan, 78, Saidul Islam, 35, Jalil Miah, 48, Nur Alam, 55, Almas, 38 and Suruz Mia, 35.
Idols vandalised at female councillor's house in Sylhet
Three Hindu idols of god and goddesses were vandalised at the residence of ward councillor of the women's reserved seat in Sylhet.
Diba Rani Dey, councillor of ward 16, 17 and 18, said her neighbour Abdul Motin and his family members vandalised idols, which were kept at the worship room, around 8am on.
Obama: We underestimated IS extremists
As the fight against Islamic State extremists in the Middle East accelerates, US officials acknowledge that they both underestimated the strength and fierceness of the enemy and overestimated the ability of Iraqi forces to counter the group also known as IS or ISIS or ISIL.
Those officials include President Obama himself, who says as much in a “60 Minutes” interview broadcast Sunday evening on CBS. Asked if his administration had overestimated the Iraq army’s ability to fight ISIS, Obama answered, “That’s true. That’s absolutely true.”
