Mafia don's aide Daud Merchant remanded

A Dhaka court has granted three-day remand to Abdur Rauf Daud Merchant, an alleged aide of Dubai-based Indian mafia Daud Ibrahim.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nuru Mia passed the order on Wednesday afternoon when the investigation officer of the case produced him before it with a seven-day remand plea.

War crimes: Jabbar verdict any day

The verdict against war crimes accused former Jatiya Party lawmaker Abdul Jabbar will be delivered any day.

The International Crimes Tribunal 1 passed the order on Wednesday morning.

Bangladesh ranks 14th in TI graft index

Bangladesh has ranked 14th among 175 countries of the world in the corruption index, said Transparency International Perception Report 2014.

According to the report, the country secured 145th position, scoring 25 in a scale of 0-100 by sliding down two steps from the position in 2013.

Mujaheed’s appeal hearing Jan 14

The apex court has set the date for commencing the appeal hearing of death-sentenced Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammed Mujaheed.

The five-member appellate bench of the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain, set January 14, 2015, as the date to begin the hearing of the convicted war criminal.

English PEN and PEN International have expressed serious concern over the punishment awarded to Dhaka-based British journalist David Bergman for contempt of court.

PEN called for the sentence and conviction to be overturned immediately in a report published on Wednesday.

RAB sends three of its men to police for interrogation

Three more RAB members, shown arrested on Monday night in the Narayanganj seven murders cases, were placed on seven days’ remand yesterday morning, a day after a local court ordered investigators to speed things up.

Police did not say where these three had been arrested at. However, yesterday afternoon, a RAB release said they had sent the three to Narayanganj police on Monday morning on the basis of a request.

Malaysia’s Proton eyes car plant in Bangladesh

Malaysian automobile company Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Sdn Bhd, widely known as Proton, hopes to open a production plant in Bangladesh soon, creating employment opportunities for Bangladeshis.

Former Malaysian prime minister and newly-appointed Chairman of Proton Mahathir Mohamad disclosed the information at a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
