Govt checking Sabbir's parents' claim 

The government is checking the claim brought by the parents of missing Ahsanullah University student Sabbir Hassan that he was among the rescued boat people, said State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam. The junior minister on Wednesday night shared the photo of the missing student on his official Facebook account and posted: “We are checking [Amra khonj nichchhi]."

Two remanded for 10 days in Garo woman rape case 

A Dhaka court has granted 10-day remand for each of the two accused who raped an indigenous woman on a moving microbus in the capital on May 21. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Amit Kumar Dey passed the order on Thursday afternoon, rejecting the bail petition filed by defence lawyer Md Shahidul Islam.

One body per grave, says Malaysia 

The 139 graves found near migrants-trafficking camps in northern Malaysia holds only one body each, Malaysia's deputy home minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar has said. The Malaysian minister came up with the statement on Thursday, following previous suspicions that they could contain multiple corpses of trafficked migrants.

Hindus from Bangladesh to be legal residents of India 

The Narendra Modi government has decided to issue an executive order to help religious minorities from Pakistan and Bangladesh who live in India, to get residential permits, reports NDTV. The decision will grant relief and a semblance of dignity to lakhs of Hindu and Sikh immigrants who are residing across the country but do not have any papers to support their residential status. For those willing to avail of the offer, the cut-off date will December 31, 2015, the sources told the TV channel.

Bar Council polls now Aug 13 

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has fixed August 13 for holding the elections of Bangladesh Bar Council. Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha-led four-member bench set the date on Thursday. The SC also ordered the Bar Council chairman, attorney general and Bar Council secretary to publish the updated voter list by July 12.

SC seeks summary on Quasem plea in 4 weeks 

The Supreme Court Appellate Division has ordered both the prosecutor and defense counsels to submit the separate concise statements within four weeks on appeal hearing against the death penalty of war crimes convict Mir Quasem Ali.

Suspected ISI member on 3-day remand

A Gazipur court has placed suspected ISI member Khalid Mehmood on a three-day remand. Senior Judicial Magistrate Elina Akter passed the order when police sought 10-day remand, Inspector Rabiul Islam of Gazipur court said.

Salahuddin shifted to hospital 

BNP Joint Secretary General Salahuddin Ahmed has been shifted to North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (Neigrihms) from a Shillong jail. The BNP leader was admitted to the Neigrihms following a court order after he complained of chest pain, The Shillong Times reported.

Rizvi, Dudu’s bail pleas rejected 

BNP Joint Secretary-General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and party chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Adviser Md Shamsuzzaman Dudu have been sent to jail rejecting their bail pleas. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Emdadul Haq passed the order on Thursday.
