Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said the government will do whatever is needed to cope with the fast-changing world; to ensure a bright future for the young generation.

"To cope with the fast-changing world, we will confidently take the necessary steps  for a brighter and beautiful future for the young generation," she said on Sunday.

The prime minister made the statement while officially inaugurating the mobile number portability (MNP) service at her official residence Ganobhaban.

Sheikh Hasina said she has sacrificed her present and future for the young generation—that will soon lead Bangladesh.

She said the pace of Bangladesh’s progress must not stop.

The prime minister mentioned that youths are the biggest strength of a country and if they can be formed with proper education, they will have a beautiful life.

She said new technologies have opened up immense possibilities for the socioeconomic development of Bangladesh.

"We are utilizing these and will do the same in the future too,” she added.

Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Mustafa Jabbar, State Minister for Information and Communication Technology Division Zunaid Ahmed Palak, Posts and Telecommunications Secretary Shyam Sunder Sikder, and Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Md Jahirul Haque also spoke at the occasion.

Speaking at the program, Posts and Telecommunications Secretary Shyam Sunder Sikder said the Finance Ministry has agreed to waive the SIM tax to get a new SIM for the MNP service.

He also said the National Board of Revenue (NBR) will issue a circular very soon in connection with this.

The MNP service allows a subscriber to change telecom carriers—retaining the same phone number. The much-awaited MNP service was launched on October 1.

BTRC has offset the price of the service, for customers, at Tk50.

The operator will change 72 hours after an application for an MNP is received. If a customer decides to change operators again, they will have to wait 90 days before doing so.
