The yearly loss of agricultural land could cause food scarcity said speakers at an ALRD roundtable

The Association of Land Reform and Development (ALRD) has called on the government to introduce specific laws to protect agricultural land.

The association held a roundtable discussion regarding the matter at the National Press Club in Dhaka, on Wednesday.

"Every year we lose agricultural land," Badrul Alam, president of Bangladesh Krishak Federation said at the roundtable. "This is very alarming, as it could cause food scarcity. We stand the risk of facing a lack of food security in the coming days.

"There are conspiracies going on against our farmers," he continued. "We have to create awareness among the farmers to protect their rights."

Badrul added: "Agriculture is almost an art form in our country; it is different from other countries. We have to save the land for our next generations."

Meanwhile, journalist Abu Sayeed Khan said: "Without an agricultural movement, it is impossible to save the land. We need villages, and we need an agricultural policy to benefit  farmers."

Other speakers at the roundtable discussion said proper initiatives and policies should be taken in favour of farmers; otherwise they will be deprived of their rights.
