PM to open five power plants Sunday

The government has successfully constructed 119 power plants since 2009

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to inaugurate five power plants with a total electricity generation capacity of 879MW on Sunday.

"Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the power plants through videoconferencing from her official residence, Ganabhaban, at 10am [Sunday]," Saiful Hasan, director (public relations) of the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB), told BSS in Dhaka on Saturday.

He said the five power plants are the Bibiyana-III 400MW Combined Cycle Power Plant in Habiganj, Zulda, Chittagong 100MW Power Plant Unit-2, Meghnaghat 104MW Power Plant in Narayanganj, Modhumoti 100MW Power Plant in Bagerhat and upgradation of Sylhet 150MW Power Plant to 225MW Combined Cycle Power Plant in Sylhet.

He added that Prime Minister's Power and Energy advisor Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, Bir Bikram, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid, the power secretary, and chairman of the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) will be present at Bijoy Hall of Bidyut Bhaban during the opening ceremony. 

According to the power ministry, the government has successfully constructed 119 power plants with electricity production capacity of 20,293MW since assuming power in 2009.

It said the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had targeted to generate 24,000 MW electricity by 2021, and the target has already been exceeded.

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid said the country’s electricity generation capacity has reached 25,235 MW (including captive power), as compared to 4,942 MW in 2009.

"We have brought around 99.5% of the population under electricity coverage due to the bold and dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina," he said.

Nasrul Hamid said the Awami League-led government has achieved tremendous successes in the power sector during its last 12 years and has given top priority to the development of the sector considering its importance in the overall enhancement of the country.

"With sincere and relentless efforts by the government, the per capita electricity generation reached to 560kWh, which was only 220kWh in 2009. The system loss has been brought down to 8.49% from 14.33%," he added.
