Gono Forum has threatened to wage a movement if the government proceeds with its decision to hike gas tariffs.
In a statement on Thursday, Gono Forum President Dr Kamal Hossain and General Secretary Mostafa Mohsin Montu described the proposal to hike gas prices as irrational.
"Protest programs will be announced if this deception in the name of a public hearing and the efforts to raise gas tariffs in the interest of LNG businessmen are not stopped," the statement said.
The Gono Forum leaders also said the raised gas tariffs would increase cost of living, as well as hamper production in factories and the development of the country.
“Industries, factories and, the transport system will be at stake if gas tariffs are hiked. It will also have a bad impact on the prices of daily essentials and transportation cost,” they observed.
Earlier, the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) held a four-day long public hearing on proposals for raising gas prices from Monday.
During the hearing, Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Ltd, Sundarban Gas Company Ltd, Bakhrabad Gas Distribution Company, and Jalalabad Gas Distribution Company placed identical proposals for hiking gas tariffs.
