Both the 1320MW coal-fired Payra Power Plant and 1320MW Rampal Power Plant should begin operating in 2020

State-owned Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB) has moved to upgrade its existing Aminbazar 230/132KV grid-substation into a 400/230KV; to facilitate electricity transmission to Dhaka city from the Payra and Rampal power plants.

According to official sources, both the 1320MW coal-fired Payra Power Plant and 1320MW Rampal Power Plant are being constructed with a goal of starting operations in 2020, reports UNB.

As part of the move, the PGCB recently signed an agreement with South Korean company Hyosung Corporation; awarding it a contract to upgrade the existing substation at Aminbazar in the city.

As per the contract, Hyosung will do the job on a turnkey basis in next two years at a cost of Tk164 crore.

The project is jointly financed by Bangladesh’s government and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

PGCB officials said they are also spending funds for the project alongside the government and donor agencies.

The state-owned Power Development Board (PDB) is building the Rampal plant under a joint venture with Indian National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) – at a cost of $2 billion – while Payra is being constructed by a joint venture of state-owned North-West Power Generation Company and China National Machinery Import and Export Corporation (CMC)—for $2 billion.

PGCB MD Masum-Al-Beruni said the upgrade of the Aminbazar grid substation will substantially improve its output capacity.

He said: “Once the upgrade is done, we will be able to transmit electricity from Payra and Rampal smoothly—and supply it to Dhaka city and elsewhere”.

PGCB officials said the Aminbazar Substation upgrade scheme is being implemented under the 400KV Aminbazar-Mawa-Mongla transmission line project.

The electricity from Payra power plant, in Patuakhali, and Rampal power plant, in Bagerhat, will come to Aminbazar Substation in Dhaka—through Gopalganj.

The substation will also be utilised to bring electricity from Meghnaghat power plant through a 400KV transmission line, they noted.

The upgrade of Aminbazar Substation project also include the installation of: three transformers  of 520MVA each , two bays of 400 kV each, two bays of 230KV each, and three transformer bays.
