Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (Bapex) has started to extract gas from North-1 gas field in Bhola's Bheduria on an experimental basis.
The extraction process began on Saturday afternoon.
Bapex Project Director Bazlul Rahman said:”We found natural gas 3,348 feet below ground level on January 15 this year. The field is estimated to contain at least 600 billion cubic feet of gas.”
He also said that extraction work on North-1 gas field started on December 9 last year in Bhola's Bheduria.
At present, around 40 million cubic feet of gas is being extracted from two of the four wells in Bhola's Shahbazpur and supplied to 225 MW and 34 MW power plants and electricity is sold to the national grid.

According to Bapex, Bhola has total reserve of 1,500 billion cubic feet gas in its Shahbazpur, Shahbazpur East-1 and North-1 gas fields.
Managing Director of Bapex Md Nowshad Islam has said the estimated value of the gas is around Tk6,500 crore.
Bangladesh produces a total of 2.7 billion cubic feet natural gas a day against a demand for 3.4 billion.
