The government has been setting up two international standard VVER-1200 reactors having five-tier safety of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in Ishwardi, Pabna.
“Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission brought international standard VVER-1200 from Russia for the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant aimed at ensuring five-tier safety,” Science and Technology Minister Yeafesh Osman said.
His remarks came in response to a question from treasury bench member MP Mamtaj Begum in the parliament on Sunday.
He said a total of 2,400MW electricity would be generated from the two reactors and each of the reactors would produce 1,200 MW power.
The minister said the nuclear power plant would begin its electricity generation work and supply to the national grid by 2023.
Osman said that the government imported and set up international standard nuclear detecting machine “High Purity Germenium Detector (HPGE)” in the country aimed at detecting nuclear item mixed with food products.
