Public meeting held for coal-based power plant in Munshiganj
A public discussion on the construction of a 635MW coal–based ultra-supercritical thermal power plant in Gozaria, Munshiganj was held on Thursday. Orion Power Unit 2 Dhaka Ltd, a subsidiary of Orion Group which is constructing the plant, organised the meeting near Orion Power Meghnaghat Ltd in Narayanganj. The discussion was attended by local public representatives, government and company officials as well as people from all socio-economic strata in the area, according to a press statement by the company. The meeting was arranged to make the residents of Gozaria aware of the project and how it would have a positive impact on the community in terms of development. Representatives of the company said as a part of the project, a bridge and connecting road would be built between Meghnaghat and Hosendi union, which has been a longstanding demand of the locals. The project will also provide job opportunities for the locals, and have school and playground facilities as well as supply of pure drinking water and free medicine, they said. Locals said projects such as this power plant was essential for the country and they had willingly sold their lands for the project to aid the socioeconomic development of their community. The company said a specific Environmental Management Plan had been developed to ensure environmental management during the project's construction and operation. They further said the project would be using ultra-supercritical technology, which means fuel consumption would decrease substantially and all sorts of pollution and emissions would be minimum. Orion Power Unit 2 Dhaka Ltd was selected for the project through a competitive tender process, and the company signed the implementation agreement and power purchase agreement with Bangladesh Power Development Board on April 21 this year. Land for the project has already been acquired in Gozaria and contracts have been signed with General Electric for the equipment. Construction of the project will commence in full swing after the completion of the Environmental Impact Assessment.
