The High Court on Wednesday granted anticipatory bail for six weeks to daily Sangram editor Abul Asad in a case filed for printing daily Amar Desh from the press of his daily prior to any consent from Dhaka deputy commissioner.
An HC bench comprising Justice Borhan Uddin and Justice KM Quamrul Quader passed the order following a bail petition filed by Abul Asad on Tuesday.
The case was filed with Ramna Police Station on Saturday night against the veteran journalist and Mahmuda Begum, acting chairman of Amar Desh Publications Ltd, for printing Amar Desh from the Sangram’s press, Al-Falah Printing Press.
Nasrin Sultana, Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate (publication), filed the case under sections 32 and 33 of the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1973.
On April 11, police arrested the acting editor of Amar Desh Mahmudur Rahman from his Karwan Bazar office on the charge of sedition. Later, he was taken on a 13-day police remand in three cases.
Later, the same night, police raided the press of the vernacular daily in the city’s Tejgaon area and sealed it.
Police seized 6,000 printed copies of Amar Desh from Al-Falah Printing Press of the daily Sangram in the city’s Moghbazar area on Saturday night. 19 press workers were also held during the raid.
Earlier, the HC on Tuesday grantedanticipatory bail for six weeks to Mahmuda Begum, acting chairman of Amar Desh Publications Ltd, in the same case filed for printing Amar Desh from the Sangram press.
