Fair election possible through discussion: Syed Ashraf

Update : 17 Apr 2013, 09:16 AM

Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam urged opposition BNP to create a congenial atmosphere to hold dialogue ahead of the election shunning the path of confrontation.

Stressing that dialogue is the only way out of the current political standoff, he said: “BNP should come forward to create an environment to hold a free and fair election.”

Ashraf on Wednesday came up with the observation while paying tribute to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at capital’s Dhanmondi area on the occasion of Mujibnagar Day.

“If BNP sits for dialogue, all disputes can be resolved through discussion and mutual understand,” said Ashraf, who is also the LGRD minister.

He also praised BNP’s “good sense” for not coming up with any hartal this week, saying they should not go for such a mode of protest at all since it “contradicts people's interests.”

The two arch rivals, Awami Leauge and BNP, have both officially expressed interests to sit for dialogue about holding the national election, which is scheduled for early next year. Neither, however, came up with any concrete plan about how to do so.
