The Awami League is conspiring to triger a state of emergency in the country, alleged BNP standing committee member, Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain, yesterday.
Pointing to Awami League spokesperson Ashraful Islam, Hossain said: “You have already split the nation and now you are plotting to bring in a state of emergency.”
Mosharraf was addressing a human chain programme demanding the release of detained BNP leaders, in front of the Jatiya Press Club in the capital.
The Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam on Thursday alleged that the BNP wants to come to power through unfair means.
Mosharraf demanded the immediate and unconditional release of the detained leaders and activists of the BNP.
The BNP leader alleged that the government was a hatching conspiracy to revive Baksal rule in the country.
He slammed the government for arresting Mahmudur Rahman, saying that it is trying to gag the voice of the opposition.
At a different human chain programme, MK Anwar, another standing committee member, said that if the government tries to hold the next elections while keeping the opposition at bay, it will face stiff resistance.
Issuing a note of warning, the BNP leader said that if anything bad happens to Mahmudur Rahman, the government will be held responsible.
Anwar went on to claim that the current regime is a fascist government, and that by sealing the Amar Desh press and arresting Mahmudur Rahman, it has proved that it wants to bring back the rule of Baksal.
He added that if it is a crime to publish Skype conversations, then consultations with foreign lawyers about the verdict is also a crime.
