BNP chief out of jail since March last year as the govt suspended her sentence
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will be allowed to go abroad for treatment if that is what the people of Bangladesh want, says Law Minister Anisul Huq.
His remarks came on Thursday while addressing an Awami League rally in Brahmanbaria’s Akhaura upazila unit.
“The Sheikh Hasina-led administration released Khaleda Zia from jail on humanitarian grounds, on two conditions. She is now living in her luxurious and comfortable house,” said Huq.
However, from the day she was hospitalized with the coronavirus, she started demanding to be allowed to go abroad, he added.
“If medical treatment can be provided for people in Bangladesh, then why abroad?” asked Huq.

“You tell me whether Begum Zia needs to go abroad or not? If you say so, we will let her go abroad,” the minister said addressing the crowd.
According to the law minister, to go abroad for advanced treatment, the only option Khaleda has is to seek presidential clemency by admitting her crimes.
The BNP, however, maintained that she had no reason to do so as she was innocent.
Khaleda Zia has been on temporary release due to the Covid-19 pandemic, subject to certain conditions, since March 25 last year.
She has been facing post-Covid complications after she contracted the virus in April this year.
The conditions of her release are that the BNP chief would receive treatment at home and would not take part in political activities.
