The Muktijuddho Mancha has decided to file a sedition case against Mamunul Haque, Joint Secretary General, Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh, and Faizul Karim, Nayeb-e-Ameer, Islami Andolan Bangladesh, for opposing the construction of a sculpture of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Leaders of the pro-Liberation War platform made the announcement at a press briefing at Dhaka University on Saturday.

Reading out a statement on the occasion, Muktijuddho Mancha General Secretary Md Al Mamun said the organisation would file the lawsuit in a Dhaka court on Sunday.

Recently, the Hefazat leader threatened to throw Bangabandhu’s sculpture into the Buriganga. He was later backed by several other Islamist leaders, including Faizul, leading to an uproar across the country.

Many organizations, including the Chhatra League and Muktijuddho Mancha, have been demanding action against the Islamist groups for such remarks.

On December 1, some 60 socio-cultural and professional organizations staged demonstrations in the city demanding the arrest of the two Islamist leaders.

The Muktijuddho Mancha leader said the body strongly condemned the threat made by Mamunul regarding the sculpture as the statement was against the country’s constitution and the spirit of the Liberation War.

“It is very unfortunate that radical forces have been misguiding the people, saying that sculptures are banned in religion [Islam]. They are trying to fish in troubled waters by saying that sculptures and idols are the same. If they are not stopped through proper legal action, they may worsen the situation,” he said.

The Muktijuddho Mancha also announced that it would organize a documentary film exhibition featuring rape incidents at madrasas at the base of Raju Memorial on the DU campus on December 9. Two days later, it would distribute leaflets in all mosques across the country to raise awareness against the rape of under-aged madrasa students.

The Muktijuddho Moncho will organise a vigil from the TSC to Shahbagh protesting the vandalism of Bangabandhu's sculpture in Kushtia.
