She urgently needs better treatment as her health condition is not good, he says
Although Khaleda Zia's sentence in a corruption case was temporarily suspended by a government executive order, she is not free, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said.
He made the remarks at a press conference at BNP chairperson's office in Gulshan on Sunday in response to a query from a journalist.
“If her sentence has been suspended, there should have no restrictions. The only difference is that she was brought back to home from the hospital. She’s now in a homely environment which can be called house arrest,” he said.
He said Khaleda Zia is really ill and they want to ensure an advanced treatment for her. “Doctors say what she needs is advanced treatment. But there’s no advanced centre here for such treatment.”
Fakhrul said Khaleda urgently needs better treatment as her health condition is not good.
On March 25 this year, the government suspended Khaleda Zia's sentence for six months in the first phase and another six months in the second phase. Following the order, Khaleda Zia was released from jail. Now she is staying at ‘Firoza’ in Gulshan, under the supervision of a team of physicians.
As per the conditions, Khaleda Zia will not be allowed to go abroad for treatment as she will have to stay home and receive treatment there.
Khaleda Zia is suffering from diabetes. She has severe pain in the joints of her hands and feet due to rheumatoid arthritis.
Although she was at home, no one including the party leaders and workers are allowed to meet her, accept a few close relatives, including his siblings.
