The government is still showing carelessness about imposing a strict lockdown, Fakhrul says

BNP has demanded a non-discriminatory health system where everyone will receive equal treatment for Covid-19. There will be no separate arrangement for VIPs.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said this at a virtual press conference on Saturday morning.

BNP has also made a 10-point recommendation to the government to deal with Covid-19.

He read out the recommendations for the government to overcome the pandemic crisis. He said to impose a strict lockdown, if needed.

He commented that the government is still showing “carelessness about imposing lockdown.”

“While the lockdown is going on in other countries, it has only started in Bangladesh. As a result, the infection could not be stopped,” he claimed.

The recommendations include -- Providing quality health care equipment to police, doctors, nurses and journalists, ensuring safe accommodation and meals for healthcare professionals nearby every hospital, rapid expansion of medical services and test facilities in each district, and with it they recommended providing financial and security assistance to garment workers and labourers.

Furthermore, Fakhrul said: “The government was hiding the actual number of Covid-19 patients forcing everyone towards danger. Those who are expressing the correct facts are being arrested.

“For commenting on the activities of the government, till now, 87 have been arrested under the Digital Security Act.

“A total of 473 people including journalists have been arrested for criticizing corruption in relief distributions and in the healthcare management system across Bangladesh,” Fakhrul said.

He said, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), 10 million people from across the country have so far applied for the Covid-19 test over the telephone and via email. Of them, only 4% of people have been able to take the test.

“Due to Covid-19, the vulnerable situation of the healthcare system in the country has come up in front of the people. On the proposed budget in terms of allocation, the health sector is in the 8th position when other countries are giving major importance to streamline their health sector,” the BNP leader dded.

“From this, it can be understood that our government is so indifferent about the health system,” he added.

Till date, 121 BNP leaders and activists have been infected and 56 have died from Covid-19.
