Awami League (AL) General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has called for strengthening the party aimed at taking the country forward.

“The Awami League does not need opportunists,” Quader said while addressing as chief guest the opening ceremony of triennial council of Rajshahi city unit of AL at historic Madrasha ground on Sunday, reports BSS.

All the party units and associate bodies will be reshuffled with only the devoted ones, he said, adding that if the committees are formed with pocket-men, AL will go into the hands of opportunists.

So, no pocket committee will be formed, he added.

Noting that conspiracies are being hatched against the Awami League, Quader said all leaders and activists should remain united to strengthen the party for thwarting the conspiracies.

He went on saying that interests of dedicated leaders and workers must be protected because they are the lifeline of the party.

“We do not give shelter to any opportunists, extortionists, land grabbers and drug-traders in the party,” he warned, adding that becoming workers instead of leaders was very important for the party.

Addressing the meeting as special guest, Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud said at present, BNP’s politics has become centred on Khaleda Zia and Tarque Rahman.

He said Bangladesh has attained significant progress in all development indicators under the present Awami League government.

“Magically, Bangladesh is going ahead under the dynamic and visionary leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,” said Dr Hasan, who also the joint general secretary of the party.

He said continuity of power stands as a significant aspect for taking the country to people’s desired stage.

“We don’t want to remain in power for a single day without public support,” Dr Hasan said citing reference of many countries which are being governed by a single party for long.

He said the adverse and derogatory behaviours of party leaders and workers are more harmful for AL than those of the opponent BNP.

“So, all the party leaders and workers should remain alert in this regard,” he added.

Chaired by AL City unit President and Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, the opening session was addressed, among others, by AL presidium members Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Abdur Rahman, Organizing Secretary SM Kamal Hossain, Abu Sayeed Al Mahmud Swapan, MP, Nurul Islam Thandu and Akhter Jahan.

Among others, Advisory Committee Members Prof Abdul Khaleque and Prof Saidur Rahman Khan, Enamul Haque, MP, Ayen Uddin, MP, Prof Monsur Rahman, MP, Dr Samil Uddin Ahmed, MP, and Advocate Adiba Anjum, MP, were present on the occasion.
