A report submitted to the High Court by the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) regarding an update on the health condition of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has said that she did not give her consent for providing advanced treatment.

The report was read out during a hearing of a bail plea, filed by Khaleda’s counsels citing illness, on Thursday.

At the hearing, Khaleda’s counsels requested the HC bench of Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice AKM Zahirul Hoque to allow them time till March 1.

However, the HC bench of Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice AKM Zahirul Hoque refused to allow any time and announced to deliver the verdict on the bail plea at 2pm Thursday.

Advocate Zainul Adedin and Barrister Moudud Ahmed stood for the petition while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam strongly opposed the argument.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Vice Chancellor (VC) of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) sent the medical report on Khaleda's latest health condition to the apex court.

On February 23, the HC bench asked the BSMMU VC to submit the report by 5pm on Wednesday through the registrar general of the Supreme Court.

The court also set Thursday for holding a hearing on Khaleda's bail petition in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case.

On February 18, the BNP chief filed a fresh petition with the High Court seeking bail in the case, citing illness.

It was mentioned in the petition that the BNP chairperson was seriously ill and needed advanced treatment.

On December 12, 2019, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court turned down the bail petition of Khaleda Zia in the graft case.

A Dhaka special court jailed the BNP chief and three others for seven years in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case on October 29, 2018.

Khaleda has been in jail since she was convicted in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case on February 8, 2018.

The BNP chief has been receiving treatment at the BSMMU since April 1, 2019.
