BNP has dismissed claims of discussing the release of the party chairperson Khaleda Zia from jail on parole with the ruling party.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the statement while speaking to the media after paying homage to BNP founder Ziaur Rahman at his mausoleum in Dhaka's Sher-e -Bangla Nagar on Tuesday.

He said: "Khaleda Zia should be released from jail immediately because democracy cannot be restored in this country without her.”

"However, I had no discussion with [Awami League General Secretary] Obaidul Quader over the matter of parole."

Therefore, they are the ones who are going to make decisions over the matter."

On Feb 14, Obaidul Quader claimed that Mirza Fakhrul reached out to him over the phone to seek the prime minister's intervention for Khaleda's release on parole.

Quader said: "BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir spoke to me about the release of Khaleda Zia a few days back."

The minister also said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had been informed accordingly.

Khaleda, a three-time former prime minister, has been in prison since February 2018, serving a total of 17 years in the Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust corruption cases.

The 74-year-old was transferred from the old central jail on Nazim Uddin Road to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) on April 1 this year, for better treatment.
