BNP alleged that police arrested some of their leaders from the area

BNP leaders and activists held a protest rally before the party's central office in Naya Paltan demanding better treatment for party chairperson Khaleda Zia and her release in the presence of the police on Saturday.

Due to the rally, traffic on both sides of the road came almost to a halt. BNP leaders alleged that police had arrested some BNP leaders from the area.

At the rally, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir alleged that the program that was announced to demand the release of Khaleda Zia was barred by the police as they arrested BNP leaders, and put up barricades in front of the party office.

He also said: "The government thinks that suppression, oppression, hindrance will obstruct Khaleda's release movement, that the demands of the mass people will be hindered. But they have forgotten the right of the people can never be suppressed.

"Begum Khaleda Zia has fought for democracy in this country. She has been kept in jail for two years and seven days. She is extremely ill. We demand good treatment and her release as soon as possible. But the government has not cooperated. We are saying again that Khaleda Zia is very ill, release her soon," he added.

BNP Standing Committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said: "We want to say that not only Khaleda Zia, they have imprisoned all of Bangladesh. There is no rule of law today. People do not get justice. Human security has been compromised everywhere."

Earlier, BNP activists claimed the police had barred them from entering the office premises since Saturday morning.

Meanwhile, police arrested Fazlul Haque Milan, organizing secretary of the party, from the Nightingale intersection. The BNP also claimed that two activists were also arrested in front of the party office on Saturday.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Motijheel division Acting Deputy Commissioner Monailsa Begum said: "They have no permission to stage the protest but later police gave verbal approval for the rally only after talking to them and they (BNP) have ended the rally peacefully."

When asked about the arrest, she said: "We have not arrested or detained anyone; some were brought in for questioning and later were released."
