Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) former mayor Sayeed Khokon has collected Awami League (AL) nomination form to contest in the Dhaka 10 constituency by-election.

Khokon's personal assistant Abul Kalam Azad collected the nomination paper from the Awami League president’s political office in Dhanmondi on Friday afternoon.

The Dhaka 10 constituency fell vacant after the former lawmaker from this constituency, Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, resigned from his seat as a Member of Parliament (MP) on December 29 after being selected as Awami League's mayoral candidate for Dhaka South.

The Parliament Secretariat on the same day issued a gazette declaring the seat vacant.

Later, Taposh became the DSCC mayor after the Dhaka city corporation elections on February 1.

Despite the fact that Sayeed Khokon failed to secure a nomination from the ruling party to contest in DSCC election, he was elevated as an executive member of the central working committee, the highest decision-making body of the Awami League on January 12.

The Election Commission has announced March 21 to hold by-elections in three constituencies, including Dhaka 10.

The last date for submitting nomination papers is February 19, last date for withdrawal of candidacy is February 29, while the commission will scrutinize nomination papers on February 23.
