They were arrested at Mohammadpur in Dhaka on Sunday morning
Police have arrested two people on charge of embezzling money from three ward councillor candidates, giving them assurance of victory in the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) election.
The two -- Saidul Islam and Palash -- were arrested from Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area on Sunday morning.
"They are the members of fraud gangs. They spoofed mobile numbers of the officers-in-charge [OCs] of Adabar and Mohammadpur police stations to embezzle the money," Biplob Bijoy Talukder, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) (Tejgaon division), said.
Earlier on January 19 and 22, the duo called Ward 30 councillor aspirants Abul Kashem and Yasin Molla, impersonating the OC of Adabar police station using his mobile number via spoofing, he said.
They demanded Tk15 lakh from the aspirants and finally collected Tk7 lakh from Abul Kashem and Tk5 lakh from Yasin Molla via different mobile financial services.
On January 24, they also called Ward 31 councillor aspirant Aleya Sarwar Daisy, spoofing the mobile number of Mohammadpur police station OC, and embezzled Tk5 lakh from her, the deputy commissioner said.
When they asked for money for the second time, the councillor candidates realized that they had been tricked.
Later, they filed separate cases with respective police stations, he added.
