Earlier in the day, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said his party will force the government to release the party chief from jail
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s imprisonment is not a matter of the Awami League-led government, rather a concern of the court, said Roads, Transport and Bridges Minister, Obaidul Quader.
"How will the government release the BNP chief? Government has nothing to do about the issue," he said.
Quader, also Awami League general secretary, said this at a meeting with Dhaka city corporations' mayors-elect Atiqul Islam and Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh at the party president’s political office in Dhanmondi, on Saturday.
Earlier in the day, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said his party will force the government to release the party chief from jail.
BNP organized the program to observe and protest two years of Khaleda’s imprisonment in two corruption cases.
In a reply to Fakhrul's remarks, Quader said: “BNP, as an opposition has the right to protest. My question is, against whom will they protest?
“The Awami League-led government didn’t imprison their chief. Our government did not even file the case against the BNP chairperson. The case was filed during the tenure of the caretaker government. It’s not a political case, so we cannot address it,” Quader added.
Responding to BNP’s countrywide demonstration to be held on February 15, the minister said: "In the name of demonstration if any violence happens, they will get a ‘proper’ answer."
Prior to the briefing, the central leaders of the party discussed the city elections.
