A Sweden-based online new portal named Netra News alleged that the minister had taken the watches as bribe in exchange for contracts as minister
Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has said the luxury watches and suits that he wears are gifts from well-wishers and party supporters abroad.
“I have not bought any of the watches I have,” Quader, who is also the road transport and bridges minister, said in response to a reporter’s question at the Secretariat on Thursday.
A Sweden-based online new portal named Netra News, which can reportedly no longer be accessed from Bangladesh, recently published a report on Quader’s expensive watches.
According to that report, the Awami League general secretary has been seen wearing seven watches on different occasions, which are priced between Tk9 lakh and Tk28 lakh, each.
“For God’s sake, I am saying that I have not bought these (watches), expensive clothes. Many activists who live abroad bring these suits for me, perhaps because they love me. One of them brought three coats for me from Singapore,” Quader said.
The news portal alleged that he had taken the watches as bribe in exchange for contracts as minister.
Refuting the allegation, Quader said: “I can swear that I have taken nothing from any contractor. No contractor is even allowed to meet me.”
The ruling party leader claimed that no one can influence him for promotion now.
He said the contractors had offered him gifts, but he rejected it outright. The prime minister herself gave him money to meet election expenses.
“I did not need to take money from anyone else,” he added.
