The trend of making money now has become a disease, the prime minister said earlier

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has alleged that ruling party leaders have got infected with the “money-making disease.”

“The prime minister yesterday (Saturday) said the tendency of making money is a disease. But you (ruling party leaders) are much infected with this disease.

You are now arresting your golden boys and asking them to be good by mending themselves,” he said on Sunday, reports UNB.

Fakhrul came up with the remarks while speaking at a discussion arranged by Nari O Shishu Odhikar Forum, a platform of BNP, at the Institutions of Engineers, Bangladesh.

Dhaka University ex-vice chancellor Prof Emajuddin Ahmed, Nagorik Oikya Convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna, BNP Standing Committee Member Selima Rahman and Prof Dilara Chowdhury, addressed the program, among others.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the trend of making money now has become a disease. “It is sickening and we want those who lead the life with honest income to get the dignity."

Addressing the triennial council of Dhaka North and South City units of Bangladesh Awami League, the prime minister also said: "The hard-earned money of people will be spent on ensuring the welfare of people, not for the lavish lifestyle of anyone."

Fakhrul alleged that the government has now become the “role model of corruption, terrorism and rape.”

Referring to the statistics of Global Anti-Corruption & Integrity Forum, he said Awami League leaders siphoned off thousands of crores of taka abroad by indulging in plundering from the share market, banks and mega projects.

“A Tk10,000 crore project has become a Tk50,000 core one. Corruption is now all pervasive,” the BNP leader observed.

To get rid of the situation, he urged people to get united and oust the government through a movement. “We all must get united, irrespective of party and opinion, and take to the streets to remove the current monstrous government. This is the only way left for us.”

Fakhrul said no-one is now safe in the country due to the current government’s “misrule.” “The incidents of repression on women and children are happening every day in Bangladesh.”

About journalist couple Sagar-Runi murder, he said journalists waged a united and strong movement demanding the trial of the case, but they later got divided while a group stayed away from the movement.

“Awami League committed the biggest crime by dividing society and polluting it. If you look around, you will see divisions everywhere.

Awami League has destroyed all the institutions in a planned way. They completely politicized the judiciary and the administration, and established control over the media,” the BNP leader alleged.

He also regretted that the media people are now imposing self-censorship to cope with the current situation and protect their existence.
