Bangladesh Awami Jubo League has named Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, the son of the organization's founder Sheikh Fazlul Haq Moni, as its new chairman.

Meanwhile, Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, president of Dhaka city (North) Jubo League, has been named as general secretary of the youth front.

Obaidul Quader,  general secretary of Awami League, announced the new leadership at the Institute of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) in Dhaka on Saturday.

Parash, 51, is the elder son of Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni, nephew of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and founder of Bangladesh Awami Jubo League.

His younger brother Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh is a three-time MP from Dhaka-10 constituency, while their uncle Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim is an Awami League presidium member and a former chairman of Jubo League.

Parash has never been active in politics until now, when he was named as Jubo League chairman.  A teacher by profession, Parash is a graduate from the Dhaka University. He also holds a master’s degree in English from the Colorado State University, USA.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina opened the seventh national council of the Bangladesh Awami Jubo League amid much festivity and enthusiasm.

The premier inaugurated the council by hoisting the national flag, and releasing pigeons and balloons at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka around 11am.

As many as 28,000 councilors from 77 districts across the country, took part in the triennial national congress of the Jubo League.

Challenges ahead for the new leadership

The new leadership of Jubo League comes at a time when several leading Jubo League leaders have been expelled or arrested for their alleged involvement in numerous criminal activities, including running underground casinos and gambling places in Dhaka city.

A number of Jubo League leaders who have come under fire in recent weeks -- including expelled Dhaka South unit Jubo League President Ismail Hossain Chowdhury Samrat, expelled organizing secretary of the same unit Khalid Mahmud, self-proclaimed member and businessman GK Shamim, and Jubo League Dhaka North unit Joint Secretary General Tarequzzaman Rajib -- have already been arrested for their reported links to illegal casinos, since a crackdown began on September 18.

In a dramatic turn of events, on October 20, the then Jubo League Chairman Omar Faruk Chowdhury, who was elected seven years ago , was relieved from his duties amid allegations of corruption.

Bangladesh Awami Jubo League was formed on November 11 in 1972 at the directive of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni was made the chairman and Nur-E-Alam Siddiqui the general secretary of the youth front.

Later in 1974, both of them were re-elected at the first congress of the Jubo League.

Amir Hossain Amu and Fakir Abdur Razzaque was made chairman and general secretary in the second congress, Mostafa Mohsin Montu and Fulu Sarker in the third congress, and Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim and Kazi Iqbal Hossain in the fourth congress respectively.

Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Mirza Azam attained to the leadership in the fifth congress while the sixth congress was held in 2012 with Omar Faruk Chowdhury and Harun-or-Rashid as the chairman and general secretary.
