Khaleda's family wants to take her abroad for better treatment

The BNP chief has been receiving treatment at BSMMU since April 1

A member of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's family has claimed that Khaleda needs to be taken abroad immediately as she requires proper medical treatment at the moment.

"Khaleda Zia did not get any treatment for last one week, and that caused her health to deteriorate further," Khaleda’s sister Selima Islam told journalists.

She made the statement after meeting her sister at her cabin at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in Dhaka on Friday afternoon.

"Khaleda cannot eat, sit, and move properly now. She lies in bed all the time. Even that has become painful for her."

Six family members – Selima, her younger brother Shamim Eskandar, his wife Kaniz Fatema, their two sons, and Shahina Khan, sister of Tarique Rahman's wife Zubaida Rahman – went to meet Khaleda around 3:20pm, and left at 4:30pm, said BNP chairperson’s media wing member Shamsuddin Didar.

Quoting Selima, Didar said: "Khaleda Zia told her that she had the right to go abroad for getting treatment at her family's cost after obtaining bail through legal process."

The BNP chief also told Selima to take steps for the legal process, Didar said.

Khaleda Zia has been in jail since she was convicted in Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case on February 8, 2018. She was also convicted in Zia Charitable Trust corruption case later in the same year, though her party claims both cases are politically motivated.

The BNP chief has been receiving treatment at the BSMMU since April 1.
