The meeting was held at the Jubo League central office on Bangabandu Avenue, Gulistan
For the very first time in the history of Bangladesh Awami Jubo League, a meeting of its presidium was held in the absence of its chairman.
The meeting was held at the Jubo League central office on Bangabandu Avenue, Gulistan, yesterday.
Sources said Jubo League Chairman Omar Faroque Chowdhury did not attend the meeting as he wished to avoid criticism from the Awami League youth front’s highest body.
On the other hand, Jubo League presidium member Atiar Rahman Dipu said the chairman himself had called the meeting but that he could not attend due to illness.
The meeting started at 10am and ended around 1pm. Jubo League General Secretary Harunur Rashid served as chair.
<Jubo League office secretary suspended>
At the meeting, a decision was taken to suspend Jubo League Dhaka South unit Office Secretary Kazi Anisur Rahman for allegedly having breached party discipline.
Council dates for the Dhaka South and North units of Jubo League were also discussed at the meeting.
Notably in context, a number of senior Jubo League leaders have recently been accused of and arrested for their involvement in the running of illegal casinos, extortion, and gambling.
Jubo League Dhaka South unit President Ismail Hossain Samrat and the same unit’s Organizing Secretary, Khalid Mahmud Bhuiyan, are among those arrested. Both have since been expelled from the party.
GK Shamim, who claims to be a Jubo League member, has also been arrested.
Furthermore, the government has imposed a travel ban on Jubo League Chairman Omar, and Bangladesh Bank has demanded that he provide bank statements.
Awami League sources said a number of other leaders of both the party and its youth front, Jubo League, have gone into hiding following the government crackdown on illegal casinos.
