They also demanded arrangements for her better treatment
Hundreds of leaders of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) associated organizations have gathered in front of National Press Club as part of a symbolic sit-in program.
They demanded the immediate and unconstitutional release of party Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.
The program started around 11am on Friday.
They also demanded arrangement for her better treatment.
Farid Uddin Ahmed, vice-president of BNP Dhaka unit, said: "We have to wage tougher movement to free our mother [Khaleda Zia]. Otherwise, democracy will never be established."
Nagarik Adhikar Andolon Forum arranged the symbolic sit-in program.
For the past few days, senior leaders and MPs of BNP have been urging the government to let the ailing BNP chief secure bail and allow her to go abroad for medical treatment.
BNP lawmakers, after visiting Khaleda at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital, on Wednesday also urged Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to see their ailing chairperson herself and take steps for her release on bail.
Khaleda has been receiving treatment at the BSMMU since April 1.
