Duja and Ducsu condemned the attacks
At least ten people, including seven Chhatra Dal activists and three journalists, have been injured in attacks on the Dhaka University (DU) campus yesterday.
The injured journalists are Anisur Rahman of the Students Journal, Rahatul Islam Rafee of Dainik Pratidiner Bangladesh, Afsar Munna of Dainik Business Bangladesh.
Among the injured, Anisur was admitted to Dhaka University Medical Centre.
Khorshed Alam Sohel, who contested in the Dhaka University Central Students Union (Ducsu) polls for the post of assistant general secretary (AGS), was also injured in the attacks around 12pm yesterday.
The injured Chhatra Dal members took primary treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) including the DU unit Joint General Secretary Shahnewaz, DU unit Assistant Organizing Secretary Mahboob Shahin, Member of Zia hall unit Kamrul Islam, and Joint Convener of Masterda Surja Sen hall Firoz Masum, among others.
Chhatra Dal leaders were called together at the Madhur Canteen on Monday morning with newly elected (Dissolved later on evening by a Dhaka court) General Secretary Iqbal Hossain Shamol as part of political co-existence on the DU campus.
University’s Chhatra Dal unit Assistant Organizing Secretary Nasir Uddin accused Chhatra League’s Dhaka University unit President Sonjit Chandra Das and his supporter for the recent attacks in TSC and in front of Central Library area.
He also accused Chhatra League activists Hossain Mahmud Apel, Vice-President of Sir AF Rahman hall unit, Mohsin Alam Talukdar, deputy publicity secretary of Jasim Uddin hall unit, and others for the attack.
The journalists, victims in the attacks, claimed they were attacked by Chhatra League's DU unit Assistant Secretary Hasan Rahat, Bijoy Ekattor hall unit Vice-President Al Farial Khondoker, Printing and Publication affairs Secretary of the hall Tarek Rahman Elite, activist of the hall Dhruba Fakir, Surja Sen hall unit Vice-President Raisul Islam, Surja Sen hall union elected Vice-President (VP) Mariam Zaman Khan Sohan, Jagannath hall union General Secretary Kajol Sarker, and Jasim Uddin hall union General Secretary Imamul Hasan.
All those attackers are fellow activists of the DU unit Chhatra League President Sonjit Chandra Das.
Shariful Islam Shopu, Joint Secretary of the Surja Sen hall unit Chhatra League, an attacker among them, is a follower of ruling student body's acting General Secretary Lekhak Bhattacharjee.
When contacted, Sonjit Chandra Das said: “Show me the evidence [that Chhatra League men were involved], we will take organizational action against the accused.
“And if you can give evidence against me [showing that I was involved], then I will resign from my post.”
Responding to a query about the attack, Dhaka University's (DU) Proctor Prof AKM Golam Rabbani told Dhaka Tribune that he has reports about the attacks.
Chhatra League only apologies for attack on journos
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Chhatra League DU chapter President Sonjit Chandra Das and General Secretary Md Saddam Hussain apologized for the attack on journalists after coming to the Dhaka University Journalists' Association (Duja), two hours after the attack but ignored the attack on the Chhatra Dal.
Saddam also the AGS of Ducsu said: "It is our failure as several indiscipline Chhatra League activists beat up journalists rather unexpectedly. We were not directed to carry out the attacks and we are very sorry for it."
Again rejecting the allegations of having been involved with the attack, Sonjit said: “I was in library. After hearing about the unrest, I went out there and came to learn about the incident. We were unaware of the attack and are sorry for it.”
Sonjit re-assured to take action against the Chhata League men who were involved in the attacks on journalists as soon as possible, but not for the attack on the Chhatra Dal.
Duja and Ducsu VP Nur condemned the attack
Dhaka University Journalists' Association (Duja) President Rayhanul Islam Abir and General Secretary Mahdi Al Muhtasim Nibir condemned the attack on journalists inside DU campus. He threatened to wage tough movements if the attackers are not brought to justice.
Meanwhile, Ducsu VP Nurul Haque Nur also condemned the attack on journalists and Chhatra Dal activists and demanded exemplary punishment.
Court suspends Chhatra Dal activities
Meanwhile, a Dhaka court has suspended the activities of the newly elected central committee of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the BNP.
Dhaka 4th Senior Assistant Judge Nusrat Sahara Bithi passed the order on Monday, and asked Chhatra Dal President Fazlur Rahman Khokon and General Secretary Iqbal Hossain Shyamol to show cause in seven days as to why their committee should not be declared illegal.
The concerned bench-clerk Kalyan Kumar Saha confirmed the matter.
The court on September 12 imposed a temporary suspension on Chhatra Dal’s council, after a plea filed by BNP leader Amanullah Aman.
