The leaders of the alliance termed the last Ducsu election as illegal and demanded re-election

Progressive Students Alliance has demanded Golam Rabbani's expulsion from the general secretary post of Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu), as he was accused of corruption and extortion.

Representative of the alliance, President of the Student Union, Mehedi Hasan said this at a press conference held in Dhaka University's (DU) Madhur Canteen on Monday.

In a written speech, he said: "Someone who has been expelled from his own organization on corruption charges cannot hold a position in Ducsu.

"The last Ducsu election was illegal and rigged. To preserve Ducsu's heritage, we demand a re-election."

The Progressive Students Alliance also supported DU and Jahangirnagar University students' ongoing protests against corruption.

On September 8, Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed dissatisfaction with Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) top brass and criticized them for their laziness.

Other leaders, including Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, pointed out several allegations of bribes against the former Chhatra League President Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon, and General Secretary Golam Rabbani.

On September 14, Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Jahangirnagar University Prof Farzana Islam accused the two leaders of demanding a "4-6%" cut from the Tk1,445 crore development project at the university.

On the same day, the duo was asked to resign and Sheikh Hasina selected the new central leadership for the student wing of the ruling party.
