The by-election to the Rangpur 3 constituency, which fell vacant following the death of HM Ershad, will be held on October 5

Jatiya Party (JaPa) Chairman GM Quader said negotiations are underway between Awami League, and his party on Rahgir Al Mahi alias Saad Ershad’s candidacy for the Rangpur-3 by-polls.

He made this statement yesterday at the party chairman’s office in Banani, Dhaka.

In reply to a question over the negotiation, Quader said: “We discussed with them [Awami League], and tried to hold talks. They said, they would think over the matter. Right now, not much can be discussed. No decisions were made so far. It will be sorted out before the deadline of nomination withdrawal.”

The by-election to the Rangpur 3 constituency, which fell vacant following the death of HM Ershad, will be held on October 5.

Jatiya Party (JaPa) has nominated Rahgir Al Mahi alias Saad Ershad, eldest son of JaPa founding chairman late HM Ershad and party co-chairman Raushan Ershad, to contest the upcoming by-polls for Rangpur 3 constituency.

“As part of a broader unity within the party, Saad Ershad was nominated as the candidate for Rangpur 3 by-polls” he said.

Quader said: “It was a unanimous decision to nominate Saad as a candidate to bring about unity in Jatiya Party, and to make the party stronger. All of our central leaders, grass-root level activists, and party loyalists will work together in support of Saad Ershad to win the contest.”

Following recent disputes over Jatiya Party's Chairmanship, and the post of Opposition leader in the parliament, the main opponents came to an understanding, to restore broader unity within the party, in a meeting held on Saturday.

GM Quader said: “We formed crisis management cell in order to carry out some organizational tasks rather smoothly. Works have already got under way. As we put our efforts to address misunderstandings, and disputes in favor of broader alliance within the party."

Meanwhile, on Sunday, JaPa Secretary General Md Mashiur Rahman Ranga expressed his confidence that Jatiya Party have become unified following meetings among party leaders, and rank and file.

Governing  Awami League on Saturday nominated its Rangpur district unit General Secretary Rezaul Karim Razu as the ruling party candidate for the Rangpur 3 seat in the upcoming parliamentary by-polls.
