BNP picked Rita Rahman, chief of People's Party of Bangladesh, one of the components of the 20-party alliance, as its candidate to contest the Rangpur 3 by-election.
The party Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi made the announcement at a press conference at the party's Naya Paltan central office on Sunday.
He said Rita, daughter of BNP founder member Moshiur Rahman Jadu Mia, will contest the by-polls as a candidate under the “sheaf of paddy” symbol.
Rita had also contested the December 30 parliamentary polls from the same seat as a Jatiya Oikya Front candidate and got defeated by the late Jatiya Party (JaPa) Chairman HM Ershad.
Five people, including two women, collected the nomination forms of BNP to contest the upcoming by-election of Rangpur 3 seat with its ticket.
They are BNP Rangpur city unit late president Mozaffar Hossain's wife Sufia Hossain, its current President Kausar Zaman Babla, Secretary General Sohidul Islam Miju, Rangpur BNP district unit Secretary General Roisuddin and Rita Rahman.
The by-election to the Rangpur 3 seat which fell vacant following the death of JaPa Chairman HM Ershad will be held on October 5.
According to the election schedule, the deadline for submission of nomination papers is September 9.
The date for scrutinizing the nomination papers is September 11 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is September 16.
