Condolences pour in for Ershad

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and President Abdul Hamid have expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of the former president.

Tributes and condolences continue to pour in for Hussain Muhammad Ershad, leader of the opposition in parliament, and Jatiya Party (JaPa) chairman, who breathed his last at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) on Sunday around 7:45am.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and President Abdul Hamid have expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of the former president.

In a condolence message released Sunday morning, the prime minister recalled Ershad's constructive role in parliament as the opposition leader.

In separate messages, the president and the premier prayed for the salvation of his departed soul, and expressed deep sympathy to Ershad's bereaved family members.

The foreign minister, speaker, deputy speaker and chief whip, along with Law Minister Anisul Haque, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Mohammad Atiqul Islam, have also mourned the death of Ershad.

Obaidul Quader in his condolence message prayed for the salvation of his departed soul, and expressed deep sympathy to Ershad's bereaved family members.

Former President of Bangladesh and Bikalpadhara President AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury also expressed his shock on Ershad's death, saying Ershad's role in Bangladesh politics cannot be erased.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed profound shock at the death of the deposed military ruler.

In a condolence message, Fakhrul prayed for the salvation of Ershad’s soul, and conveyed profound sympathy to his bereaved family members, and well-wishers.

Earlier, at a press conference, BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi declined to give instant reaction on Ershad’s death.

Krishak Sramik Janata League President Kader Siddique also expressed his mourning to Ershad’s death, saying: “Ershad is an inevitable name in the history of Bangladesh politics.”

He also added that none of the dictators do politics after quitting power, but Ershad did.

Bidisha bids an emotional farewell to ex-husband

Bidisha Siddique, the former wife of HM Ershad, has bid an emotional farewell to her ex-husband, expressing deep shock in a Facebook post from Ajmer Sharif in India.

She put a black badge on her profile picture by removing the previous photo of Ershad, and their son Eric.

"We’ll no longer meet in this life. You left the world while I came to Ajmer Sharif. It seems more peaceful for you than suffering from so much pain. We may meet in another world with no politics,” Bidisha wrote.

The wedding of military ruler Ershad with Bidisha, the daughter of poet, and professor Abu Bakar Siddique, was the most discussed subject in the country over one and a half decades ago. The couple has a son, Eric Ershad.
