Mosharraf urges unity of party leaders
BNP standing committee member Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Saturday demanded the release of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia from jail before the Eid-ul-Fitr on grounds of compassion and empathy.
"The Prime Minister's intention was to hang onto power through fraudulent elections by sending BNP chief Khaleda Zia to jail. You (PM) have already completed your task. So, what's the urgency to keep her (Khaleda) in jail now?" he stressed.
Speaking at a discussion, the BNP veteran said: "Begum Zia is sick. I demand her immediate release before the Eid on humanitarian grounds."
Dr. Mosharraf further warned the government that people are getting ready to take to the streets to have Khaleda released from jail.
On February 8, 2018, Khaleda was sent to jail, convicted in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
"All the fascist regimes in the past had to quit in the face of mass uprisings. You will also meet the same fate."
The BNP opposition arranged the program at the Jatiya Press Club, marking the 38th death anniversary of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman.
Saying that conspiracies are being hatched to undermine the BNP, Mosharraf Hossain urged party loyalists and opposition activists to work in concert to raise public opinion against the government.
The BNP leader also bemoaned that morality and truth are now being trampled by greed and coercion.
"Against this background, we must hold up the ideals of our party founder Ziaur Rahman to restore democracy in the country."
