Awami League has chalked out several programs to mark the day

The 38th homecoming day of Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is being observed.

The nation is officially observing the day on Friday.

Awami League and its affiliated organizations have chalked out several programs, including milad, doa mahfil and discussions, to mark the day.

President Abdul Hamid issued a message on the occasion, reports UNB.

According to Mahabubul Alam Hanif, acting general secretary of the party, Awami League will organize various events starting from May 17 to 31, across the country.

On May 17, 1981, Sheikh Hasina returned home from India after nearly six years in exile following the assassination of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman—and most of his family members—by a group of army officers on August 15, 1975.

Both of Bangabandhu's daughters—Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana—survived as they were in Germany during the assassination, and moved to India 19 days later.

Three months before the return of Sheikh Hasina, the party elected her as the president of Awami League—in her absence—at the party's national council held from February 14 to 16, 1981.
