The senior BNP leader has also urged his countrymen to pledge to restore the ideals of independence
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said his party will form a mass movement, with the people of the country, to restore democracy and free Khaleda Zia from jail.
He made the remarks after paying tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War, placing wreaths on the National Memorial marking the 49th Independence Day on Tuesday morning.
Fakhrul said: “The spirit and ideals for which we fought the Liberation War have been destroyed today. The ruling Awami League is trying to reestablish BAKSAL today as it did in 1975 when it ruined our independence.”
“People are being deprived of their rights, security, and democracy today. That is why BNP, along with the people, will form a mass movement to reclaim democracy and free Khaldea Zia from jail.”
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has been in jail since February 8 last year after being convicted in two graft cases.
The senior BNP leader has also urged countrymen to take pledge of restoring the ideals of independence.
BNP Standing Committee Member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Publicity Affairs Secretary Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie were also present at the time, among others.
